A two-day national symposium on robotics and autonomous vehicles is being organised by the Research and Development Establishment (Engineers) (R&DE(E)) at their centre in Dighi on April 28 and 29.

The symposium, which will bring together the industry, academia, research laboratories and users like the armed forces and paramilitary forces, will see live demonstrations of several unmanned air, ground and underwater vehicles.

A spot visit to the R&DE(E) centre in Dighi on Tuesday revealed that the centre has become a beehive of activity. Defence scientists, normally busy with research, were seen preparing lists and going through logistical details of hosting the 250 delegates, who will arrive from all over the country.

According to head of robotics at R&DE(E), Alok Mukherjee, the symposium will see stalls put up by several research organisations and academic institutions.

While the R&DE(E) will introduce the delegates to their latest low cost, remotely operated vehicle, ‘Takshak’, capable of defusing improvised explosives devices (IEDs), the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR), Bangalore, will showcase its wall-climbing and self-righting robot.

Hi-tech Robotics Systemz from Gurgaon will exhibit their eyeball robot and robot mole. Other interesting robots that will be on display include the underwater robot from the National Institute of Oceanography in Goa, and a Humanoid built by the students of the Birla Institute of Technology in Pilani.

Speaking to DNA, S Guruprasad, director of R&DE(E), said this is the second time that the organisation is organising a national-level symposium on unmanned vehicles and robotics, the first having been organised in November 2008.

Guruprasad said, “Future wars would be fought through unmanned battlefield systems. We consider it our responsibility to facilitate the development in the field of unmanned vehicles.”

W Selvamurthy, chief controller (R&D) at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), would inaugurate the symposium and Lt Gen (retd) VJ Sundaram, advisor, National Design & Research Forum, will deliver the keynote address on April 28.
