If you are stuck in a traffic jam and suddenly a group of young buys confront you, accusing you driving over their feet, take care of your belongings first.

While 53-year-old businessman Chitranjan Khona was cursing the bottleneck at Andheri (East) on Monday night, he had another jolt waiting for him.

"I was driving towards Bandra (East) at 9.15 pm when the traffic came to a standstill at the Regency Hotel junction. Suddenly, a boy in his early twenties banged on the cars window, pulled open the door opposite the driver's seat and started hurling abuses at me. He accused me of running over his feet," said Khona.

Before Khona could react, another man pulled his door open diverting his attention and started shouting that he could have injured the boy fatally. "The man was reaching for my collar and I was trying to fend him off. However, they left in about fifteen minutes and I drove off," he said.

After some time Khona reached for his phone which he always keeps on the passenger seat and found it was missing. I then understood the trap," added Khona.

The Andheri police registered over such five cases in the last fortnight. "After several such complaints, we rounded up a few suspects who turned out to be from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh and confessed to their modus operandi. These robbers come with just a pair of clothes to the city, share rooms and escape as soon as any of their gang members come under the scanner," said an officer from Andheri police station on condition of anonymity.

The robbers had also targeted the driver of a colleague of Khona's French lecturer wife at Kalina university, Dolon Gupta. "After Khona narrated his story, I remembered that my driver too faced the same situation on Hill Road. My driver had a scuffle with a man, who accused him of running over his feet. We were lucky because a police van suddenly appeared and the man left. I found it odd that instead of seeking the police's help, he chose to run away," said Gupta.
