Days after becoming the mayor of Mumbai, Sunil Prabhu on Monday assured the newly-formed House that he would ask the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration to take measures to curb illegal sale of dangerous chemicals so that the incidents like the Dharavi tragedy could be averted.

Following the Dharavi Holi tragedy, which claimed one life and affected more than 200 children, corporators across party lines demanded that the BMC should take proactive steps in curbing such cases in future.

Leader of the opposition Dnyanraj Nikam made a statement in the floor of the house regarding the incident. He said the civic staff did not take any action against spurious chemicals and dye colours.

“Had the BMC seized the chemicals, the tragedy could have been averted. Now that the unpleasant incident has happened, the BMC should take immediate steps in other areas so that such instances could be avoided in future,” Nikam said.

More than 20 corporators expressed their displeasure over the way the entire incident was handled. Shiv Sena corporator Shubha Raul said that BMC should not only seize such chemicals with the help of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) officials but also take the help of Food and Drugs Administration to control usage of hair dyes and hair colours that harms eyes and skins.

Dr Ajanta Yadav from the Congress said the BMC should form a committee and present the report in the House.

However, Congress corporator Pravin Chheda raised the issue of newly-elected mayor not visiting the spot and also the hospitals. Chheda said that when chief minister Prithviraj Chavan could visit the hospital and also institute an inquiry committee, new mayor was expected at least to visit the house of the child, who lost his life. MNS leader Dilip Lande has accused the civic administration for the inaction.
