More than 15,000 people in the city participated in a signature campaign against animal slaughter at the biggest slaughterhouse of Mumbai, Deonar, on the occasion of the 2610th birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir on Saturday.

The campaign was organised at Sonyamaruti Chowk, by the Jain Social Group Pune Midtown on the occasion of Bhagwan Mahavir Jayanti. More than 15,000 people signed the 500-foot canvas registering their protest against the slaughterhouse.

Suhas Ramanlal Shah, president of the organisation, said we have launched a protest against the renovation of this slaughterhouse where modern machinery will be installed to increase the capacity of slaughtering more animals in a day.

At present, more than 300 animals are slaughtered every day at the slaughterhouse and after installing modern machines this number will increase up to 15,000, which is unacceptable.

We believe in the sayings of Bhagwan Mahavir and walk on the path of non-violence, which is why the whole Jain community has opposed this development, he added. To register our protest this signature campaign was organised and we have managed to get more than 15,000 signatures including the sign of Pune mayor Mohansingh Rajpal. Politicians Ramesh Wanzale, Mohan Joshi, Chandrakant Chhajed and Abhay Chhajed also extended their support to the campaign, he added.

A video recording of this campaign will be sent to the prime minister, the chief minister, the Supreme Court and all the authorities concerned so that animal slaughter at such a large scale can be stopped.

“The president of the Jain Social Groups International Federation (JSGIF), Sharad Shah, has confirmed that the protest will soon take place at the national-level. He was also present at the campaign to support us, said Shah.
