The state government has given a go ahead to the Director General of Police to promote nine Inspector Generals of Police (IGPs) to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) indicating that a major reshuffle of senior state police officials is on the cards.

In a letter issued on Friday evening the state home department confirmed that the concerned officers’ names have been cleared by the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) making them eligible to be elevated to the higher rank.

The officers transferred include PK Jain, joint commissioner, State Intelligence Department (SID), SC Mathur, on deputation with the Union government, AK Sharma, commissioner, Railways, Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner, Crime, Mumbai, Meeran Borwankar, Police Research Institute, Pune, Rajendra Sonawane, joint CP, Pune (All from the 1981 batch), Datta Padsalgikar, joint director, Intelligence, KL Prasad, joint CP, Mumbai and Ankush Dhanvijay (1982 batch).

However, SC Mathur is unlikely to return to the state in the near future as he is on an important central assignment. The rest would get their postings as and when the vacancies arise, the home ministry officials informed.

At present there are four posts of the rank of ADGP lying vacant and the senior four — Jain, Sharma, Maria and Borwankar — will soon occupy the same. The available posts are those of commissioner, SID, principal secretary, Home, Protection of Civil Rights (PCR) and training. PK Jain is already holding additional charge of principal secretary, Home and is likely to retain the same in the ensuing reshuffle, which may be announced in the coming week.

The city of Mumbai will lose two of its high profile officers in Maria and Prasad. Several others too will have to shifted, after the DPC clears the names of officers who are going to be promoted as IGPs and DIGs in the coming days.
