The promise of gifting gold ornaments and a house to his wife, led a 26-year-old man to kidnapping a 14-year-old boy from Borivli, and subsequently, getting arrested.

The police rescued the boy, Arun Binda, and have charged the wife with abettment.  “The accused have been identified as Hemant Sangoi and his wife Sarita, 24,” said a police officer.

“The accused got the idea of making money by kidnapping after reading numerous such reports in newspapers,” the police said.
According to the police records, Hemant and Sarita had married, after a brief courtship, about nine months ago. Police sources said that Hemant, who himself had a hand-to-mouth existence, during the course of their courtship had reportedly promised Sarita that he will keep her happy and will also gift her gold ornaments. He also assured her that he will buy a house for them in Mumbai in some time. The couple was living in Sangli.

Police officials said that before Sangli, Hemant lived in Manubhai chawl at Carter Road in Borivli (East) with his parents. In order to keep his promises, he decided to earn some quick money by kidnapping some children from his former neighbourhood and demanding ransom from their parents. Sources added that Sangoi shared his plan with his wife who is believed to have given him a go-ahead.

Sources said that four days prior to his arrest on Monday, Sangoi reportedly lured the victim with the offer of giving him a cricket bat and other kits. It has been learned that the accused even made the boy unconscious with a chemical when he resisted and took him to Sangli. Binda’s parents lodged a missing complaint the same day, when he failed to return home.

Officials said that on Monday Sangoi made a call to one his friends Kuldip, who stays in the same chawl in Borivli, to know what was happening in the area. Later, he made a ransom call to the victim’s father demanding Rs35 lakh and asked the money to be sent to a place in Daman.

However, the police realised that though the ransom amount was told to be delivered in Daman, the calls were being made from Sangli. The Sangli police were informed immediately, who then rescued the boy from Abhay Nagar in Sangli. The accused was arrested and handed over to the Kandivli police. His wife, too, was arrested for abetting the crime.
