A director of Ajanta Manufacturing Limited, a well known clock manufacturing company, was repeatedly slashed with a cutter-knife by a former distributor on Friday.

Jeshubhai Patel, 52, was attending an exhibition of watches at the Nehru Planetarium Centre in Worli in the morning when Nagpur-based Sandip Mathuria, 50, who was one of the distributors of the watch company until five years ago, got into an argument with him.

Onlookers immediately intervened, separated the two and stopped things from turning ugly.

Around 4.45pm, Mathuria again picked up an argument just as Patel was leaving the exhibition with his associates. The situation soon got out of hand and Mathuria lunged at the Ajanta director with a cutter-knife and began slashing him with it, said a witness.

Patel suffered five injuries, three of which were on his face.

The crowd got hold of Mathuria, after which the police were called. Patel, who had reportedly begun to bleed profusely, was rushed to the Jaslok Hospital, where he was later declared out of danger.
Dr SK Mohanty, medical director, Jaslok Hospital, said, "He was brought around 5pm with injuries on the scalp and the face. They were caused by a sharp object. Presently, plastic surgeons are conducting an operation. His condition is stable."

The police have not been able to find out the reason for the assault yet, said Kishore Jadhav, deputy commissioner of police (zone 3). They, however, suspect that a work-related dispute led to the attack.
Sources said Mathuria, who is considered a largely successful distributor of clocks in Nagpur, was stripped off his distribution rights of Ajanta clocks about five years ago.

"This could have been the trigger for Mathuria's action," said another police officer.

Mathuria has been arrested under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and he will be produced before the Bhoiwada court on Saturday, said senior inspector Deepak Pawar of the Worli police station.

Ajanta Manufacturing Limited, a Gujarat-based company is said to be a world leader in clock manufacturing. It also manufactures other electronic equipment like calculators, educational toys and telephones.
