In a daring incident, the crime branch officials on Friday afternoon apprehended a man who had come to the sessions court at Kala Ghoda to allegedly set free an accused involved in the murder of lawyer Shahid Azmi. The man has been identified only as Munna and reportedly belongs to the Navlekar gang. Police say he had an accomplice who managed to escape.

For associates of the Bharat Nepali gang, Devendra Babu Jagtap alias JD, Pintoo Deoram Dagale, Vinod Yashwant Vichare and Hasmukh Solanki, who were held by the crime branch for allegedly killing Azmi in February last year, had come to the MCOCA court for the hearing.

“Crime branch unit-6 officials, who were present in the court
premises saw suspicious movements of a person and apprehended him. On searching him, they recovered a weapon and a few live cartridges. He was placed under arrest and is currently being grilled,” said a crime branch source.

Another official confirmed that Munna had reportedly come to secure the release of JD and his men. “He had come to free them from the court premises. We are investigating how the operation was to be carried out,” the official said.

Additional commissioner of police (crime) Deven Bharti said, “We are working on certain information and it is too early to make any further comments.”

Shahid’s brother, advocate Khalid Azmi, raised questions on the security at the court premises. “It is not possible for one person to make four accused escape from the court. Also, how did the person manage to carry the weapon despite police presence up to the fifth floor? It is a serious concern and I will write to the senior police officials in this regard,” he said.

Azmi said that he learnt about the person through other lawyers present in the court. “I had gone to the Sewree court and after 3pm, I started receiving calls from my colleagues and the media about a man who was arrested with a weapon in the court. I was told that I was not his target, but the plan was to set free the accused involved in the assassination of my brother,” Khalid said.
