A 38-year-old shop owner from Mahim has been arrested for lodging a false case of robbery. Naruddhin Mulla, 38, who owns a workshop for polishing gold ornaments, had lodged a complaint with the Mahim police station, alleging that two people hypnotised him and robbed him of jewellery worth Rs3.5 lakh.
When the matter was investigated, police found out that Mulla, an online lottery buff, had sold part of the ornaments and spent the money.Inspector Vinay Kulkarni said Mulla had used up Rs55,000 on single-digit lottery, lent Rs20,000 to a friend and paid some money to his landlord in Mulund.
Police said Mulla’s shop is in the Kapad Bazar area of Mahim and he used to get business from local jewellers. On November 21, Raju Jewellers and Ambika Jewellers gave gold ornaments weighing about 192 gm to Mulla for polish. In the evening, Mullah sent Behra, his assistant, to collect labour charges from local jewellers.
In his complaint, Mulla told the police that around 8.45 pm, two people visited his shop to inquire about polishing gold ornaments. He said the duo hypnotised him and decamped with the 192gm jewellery.
When Behra returned around 9 pm, he found an unconscious Mulla lying on the floor. After gaining consciousness, Mulla narrated him the story. Then, Mulla lodged a complaint at Mahim police station and also gave complete descriptions of the duo.
When the police started the probe, they suspected a foul play because other shopkeepers in the area said they had not seen anyone with that description enter Mulla’s workshop. During interrogation, he broke down and admitted he had lodged a false complaint and handed over about 90 gm of jewellery worth Rs1.34 lakh.
