A man who posed as a CBI/ CID officer and approached men who walked alone in the afternoon in the Bandra-Khar area and hoodwinked them into parting with their gold ornaments and mobile phones, was nabbed by the Khar police on Friday.

“Twenty-year-old Anwar Ahmed Sheikh, a resident of Kurla (East), was booked under sections 170 (personating as public servant) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. The police recovered a gold chain, two gold rings and a mobile from him,” said senior police inspector Mangesh Pote of Khar police station and added that Sheikh was remanded to police custody till January 25.

During interrogation, Sheikh revealed that he was actually an air conditioner repairer and couldn't earn enough money to run his house. Therefore, he came up with them plan to loot people by posing as a CBI/ CID officer. He was earlier arrested by Pydhonie police in 2003 for a similar offence.

Describing Sheikh's modus operandi, API Popat Muley of Khar police station said that Sheikh used to keep a watch on men who would stroll in the afternoon. Posing as a CBI/CID officer, he would stop them and tell them that some serious offence like murder, robbery or dacoity had occurred in the area. He would then ask the men to hand over valuables like gold ornaments, cash and mobile phones to him so he could keep them safe from the dacoits. Believing his yarn, many scared individuals used to hand over their valuables to Sheikh, following which he fled. The victims would then realise they had been cheated by the conman.

Finally, the police set up a trap in Khar 15 days ago. The efforts bore fruitful results when they caught Sheikh red handed at Khar garden.
