The accused, Harjeet Sinh Kaushal, defended himself, saying that Indumati Mangate, 50, was doing black magic on him to ruin his life. The police arrested Kaushal on Wednesday.
A 30-year-old man allegedly attacked his handicapped neighbour with a sword in Bhandup on Wednesday. Trying to deflect the sword, the victim had her right thumb chopped off, the police said.
The accused, Harjeet Sinh Kaushal, defended himself, saying that Indumati Mangate, 50, was doing black magic on him to ruin his life. The police arrested Kaushal on Wednesday.
Indumati, a resident of Tulshetpada in Bhandup, was crippled by polio, and stayed at home almost all the time. On Wednesday, her five-year-old granddaughter was with her when Kaushal knocked on the door. He started abusing and cursing Indumati the moment she opened the door.
Indumati was stunned, and took time to react. Kaushal attacked her with the sword he was carrying. He stabbed the woman on her face, hands and neck. Trying to save herself, the woman raised her hands, and got her right thumb chopped off.
Hearing her cries for help, the neighbours came to Indumati’s rescue. None of them, however, dared to stop Kaushal because of the sword in his hand. One of the neighbours called up the victim’s son, Dinesh, who was away at work.
“I came to know of the incident from a neighbour, and rushed home,” Dinesh said. “On my way, I saw Kaushal coming. He attacked me too. Had it not been for the neighbours who intervened, he would have killed me.”
A senior officer of Bhandup police station said, “A case was registered against Kaushal on Wednesday evening, and he was promptly arrested from the locality. During interrogation, he confessed to have attacked Indumati. He told us that the woman practised black magic on him, and that had ruined his life.
