Man arrested for fraud worth 11 lakh

The anti-extortion cell of the Pune crime branch arrested a suspect for allegedly duping a woman of Rs11 lakh on the pretext of securing admission for her daughter in a prestigious college in the city.

The arrested suspect has been identified as Shishir Ramakant Gupta (24) of Palace Orchid, NIBM Road in Kondhwa, and hails from Uttar Pradesh. The complaint was registered by Meher Nigar Shakil Siddique with the police.

According to the police, Gupta had opened his office called Siddivinayak Educational Services in Kondhwa and claimed to secure admissions for aspirants in city colleges. Gupta is a graduate in science and has been living in Pune for the last two years.

The complaint had got to know about Gupta’s service in Varanasi, following which she approached him for admission to a city-based MBA college for her daughter. Police said that the suspect asked for Rs11 lakh for his services.

After taking the money, Gupta shut shop and the complainant approached the police. Senior police inspector, Sachin Savant, told DNA that they had recovered Rs6 lakh and marksheet and certificates from the suspect.

Savant said, “We are urging people to approach the police, if someone is duped in the same manner.”
