The Sakinaka police on Monday arrested a person for allegedly cheating over 150 job applicants of lakhs of rupees.

The police said Aziz Ansari, 37, was the manager of Silverline Associates, a Sakinaka based overseas job recruiting agency.

In July 2007, the agency recruited around 150 people promising them drivers’ job in a Russian gas company in Saudi Arabia. However, on reaching there, they were made to work as labourers.

“The company showed us our work permit, which stated we were hired as labourers,” said Azim Abubaqar, 42.

Abubaqar claimed that he had paid Rs1.10 lakh for the job and stayed in Saudi Arabia for just five months before returning to Mumbai. “We were kept in the dark. They gave us our passport and visa only at the time of departure to Saudi Arabia,” he said.

Another victim Parmeshwaran Kupa from Karnataka, who paid Rs80,000 to Ansari, said, “Before going to Saudi Arabia I was told I would be working as a crane operator.  There, I was not permitted to work as a machine operator.”

“I fought with the company. But they told me I would have to pay around 8,000 Saudi riyals (around Rs80,000) to get my work permit converted to that of a machine operator.”

The victims also alleged that the agency charged them for their travel to Saudi Arabia. But they later learnt that the company had already paid the agency their travel fares.
Senior inspector Yashavant Vatkar said, “The complaint was lodged in March. We have arrested Ansari. The owner of the agency Shamin is believed to be in Saudi Arabia.”

“Shamin’s visa expires soon and he will return to India. We will arrest him once he comes back,” investigating officer and sub-inspector Vikram Vilas Chavan said.
The two have been booked for cheating. Ansari has been remanded in police custody till May 2.

When DNA contacted Silverline Associates, employees refused to reveal their names and claimed that Ansari was no longer employed with the company.
