The Worli police on Saturday refused to register a first information report (FIR) against four people who assaulted a man at his office over a property dispute.

Sanjiv Srivastava (name changed) has had his office near Atria Mall in Worli for four years. The premises are owned by Anil Chetlani who runs a garage called De Kaar Nexus in Mahalaxmi.

However, Srivastava discovered a year ago from the BMC that Chetlani was not the property’s rightful owner and asked him to return the rent he had paid. According to Srivastava, he had been receiving threats from Chetlani for over six months. He informed the police and asked for security but in vain.

On Saturday, four men beat up Srivastava black and blue at his office. Moreover, officials at the Worli police station allegedly refused to register an FIR in the case. They merely registered a non-cognisable offence against the assaulters. Despite attempts, they were unavailable for comment.

“I was bleeding as I narrated to the police what had happened. However, one police official said, ‘The injury is minor; it’s not like you are dead’,” said Srivastava.

“The police took an hour and a half to take him to the nearby Podar Hospital for a medical test,” said a friend of Srivastava’s. “The report mentioned that the injuries on his back were inflicted by a blade. In spite of that, the police refused to register an FIR. They then told us that they had instructions from seniors not to register a case.”

Srivastava said Chetlani was called to the police station on January 26 when he assured he would not venture near Srivastava’s office premises.
