Maharashtra will have urban policy soon: Prithviraj Chavan

Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said on Friday that the state government will soon have a comprehensive urban policy. He was addressing a press conference in Pune. The urban population in the state is 40 to 42% at present which will reach 50% by the end of this decade. “Urbanisation is creating problems like slums, encroachments and traffic congestion,” he said.

Issues like sanitation, solid waste management and water supply, traffic management will be comprehensively covered under the policy. Chavan also said the state has faced various challenges in last two years and it will be back in the top ranks within four years.

The CM also said the Union government will soon decide whether sugar should be exported or not. The state will take measures to avoid scams like Adarsh Society.

Chavan said the state has increased the retirement age of principals to 65 from 60 and from 58 to 62 for college teachers. “It is a temporary solution.  The state will intervene in the Supreme Court which is hearing a case of the non appointment of principals,” he said.
