Across the state, most merit list toppers and MBBS aspirants have their hearts set on Seth GS Medical College of KEM Hospital. In fact, on the very first day of admissions, the top three toppers put down the civic-run medical college as their first choice.

There are three civic-run medical colleges in the city: GS Medical College of KEM Hospital, Topiwala National Medical College of Nair Hospital and Lokmanya Tilak Medical College of Sion Hospital. The number of seats available at these colleges is 180, 120 and 100 respectively, and are top choice for meritorious students every year.

After these, students vie for admission into the state-run Grant Medical College of JJ hospital with a seat capacity of 200.

Explaining why the best students opt for KEM's medical college, Dr Sanjay Oak, dean, GS Medical College, said, “There is a good environment for academic activities. Most of the research is done at this college. The patient workload is also very huge compared to other hospitals.”

“While most parents are curious about which college their wards will be admitted into, we cannot make predictions. Since these are central admissions, sometimes, predictions may go wrong. So we just hand out the information brochure which has last year's cut-off marks,” said Dr Sachin Mulkutkar, chief of the Mumbai centre.
