The state government will rethink its decision of scrapping the Navi Mumbai Metro rail route covering Vashi, Kopar Khairane, Airoli, Digha due to non-feasibility report by an agency.

The urban development department said that, if the feasibility was proved for the areas, it has no objection to going ahead with the route. It also announced to kick start the construction work for the first phase between Belapur and Pendhar by May 1.

MLAs from Thane and Navi Mumbai strongly objected over the decision of the Cidco to scrap the route covering certain areas that are dominated by the rail commuting people. Sandeep Naik and Jitendra Avhad of NCP said that they do not agree with the feasibility report of agency.

“Airoli, Digha, Vashi are dominated by middle and lower middle class. These areas need the rail most, whereas the approved phase of the Metro was implemented in the plush areas of the Navi Mumbai,” Avhad said. Minister of state Bhaskar Jadhav said that following the demand from the elected representatives, his department will conduct the feasibility survey once again.

“Our intention is to connect the Mumbai with its suburbs and hence the first phase of 11.15km of the Metro was being implemented the between Belapur and Pendhar with great seriousness.”

Jadhav said that the first phase will be extended further once the notified land for it was acquired from Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation. The minister said that the first phase will be commissioned by August 2014 and other two phases by August 2015-16.
