From early next week, getting your car or bike registered at the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) will cost you more as higher Motor Vehicle (MV) taxes, imposed on conventional fuel-powered vehicles in the state budget, are expected to be brought in force.

The new MV tax structure has not yet been implemented in spite of its declaration in late March, as the Assembly approved it only in mid-April. “Consequently, the necessary Government Resolution (GR) has not been published yet. It has been finalised and kept ready but will be published by Monday afternoon and then sent to all RTOs in the state for implementation,” said a senior official from the transport department, who spoke to DNA on condition of anonymity.

In his state budget presented on March 26, finance minister Ajit Pawar made the following changes in the MV tax of private vehicles: Petrol vehicles priced at less than Rs10 lakh will attract 9% tax while those priced between Rs10-20 lakh will attract 10% tax, and vehicles costing more than Rs20 lakh will attract 11% tax.

The taxes are further more when it comes to petrol-run imported or corporate company vehicles: 10% for vehicles priced at less than Rs10 lakh; 12% for vehicles costing Rs10-20 lakh, and 14% for those priced above Rs20 lakh. For diesel vehicles, the figures are: 11% for vehicles priced at less than Rs10 lakh, 12% for those priced between Rs10-20 lakh and 13% for vehicles that cost more than Rs20 lakh. When compared to existing values, the increase in MV tax for petrol vehicles is 2%, and for diesel ones it’s 4%.

“Although the assembly took some time to clear the budget, these recommendations remained intact and no amendments were made. Since Tuesday is a Maharashtra Day holiday, we expect that the RTOs across Mumbai to begin implementation Wednesday onwards,” the official said.
