Maharashtra safer for women than Uttar Pradesh: NCW

As part of their India tour in order to get status on criminal cases wherein women were targeted, a team of National Commission for Women on Tuesday visited the city police chief. The team showed satisfaction with the way the state police deals with women abuse cases, and said that the safety and security condition for women in Maharashtra is much better than that of Uttar Pradesh.

Headed by Yasmeen Abrar, acting chairperson of NCW, the team visited Arup Patnaik’s office and discussed the status of women-related cases, including the recent case of Kurar gang rape.

“Rate of crimes against women is increasing in India and is the highest in UP. We came here to get a status on the Kurar rape case, but after a meeting with the police commissioner we have learnt that the police have already taken action and arrested three people involved in the crime. The evidence they have got in the case is satisfying. We have also asked the police for a list of pending cases of crime against women,” said Abrar.

She said that the most important fact with regard to the police investigations in Maharashtra is that the evidences are not tampered with and cases are not twisted. “Unlike UP, cases are not twisted here. In UP, sometimes, in rape with murder cases, the fact that the victim was raped is not brought on record by the police. In some cases, rape-murder cases are made into suicide cases,” Abrar said.

Abrar added that a five-member committee will submit its final report to the Centre. The team has visited Delhi, UP, Rajasthan and will head to Karnataka.
