Alarmed by the rising number of accidents, the Maharashtra RTO is planning to promote academic courses in transport to spread awareness about road safety.

The course, Bachelor of Arts in Transportation, will be spread over three years and will help all kinds of transport workers, from drivers to professionals. If you are a driver, you can do a diploma. If you want to do a professional course you can do a BA, which would be a three-level course.

“The programme is supported by Commonwealth learning Center in Canada and will be launched on Tuesday and will be conducted by the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU). The diploma programme will be for one year and the degree course will be of three years.  There are options like 6-month certificate course and 2-year advance diploma programme for people who want to complete their studies in steps,” a senior RTO official said.

“The course contents typically include topics dealing with general awareness, road safety rules and regulations, handling accidents and emergencies on road, etiquettes and manners, stress management, communal harmony and civic responsibility, social sensitivity especially to the physically-disadvantaged, adjustment in the family, personality development and basic economics. It also includes components like preparing a budget and financial management, sensitivity to the risks associated with consumption of alcohol and drugs and basic skills related to vehicle maintenance and repair,’’ he added. 

Not only drivers but people working in transport industry like fleet operators, traffic managers, PWD surveyors, sales executives in automobile industry, booking agents, stage planners, depot managers etc. The study material consists of print material and non-print material, including e-learning modules, practical components in the form of DVDs, community radio programmes and web-based inputs.
