The newly-unveiled state industrial policy has received a luke warm response by the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce Industries & Agriculture (MCCIA), which says a lot needs to be done to make the state investor-friendly. However, it pointed out that the difference between the industrial policies of the state and that of Gujarat were not very different.

While Gujarat brands its industrial policy with vibrant exhibitions every year, the  MCCIA  stated strong branding and marketing initiative was lacking in Maharashtra’s industrial policy.

According to rough estimates of the last few years, Maharashtra has lost around Rs30,000 crore of investment, generating employment for 30,000 people to Gujarat.

Comparing Maharashtra’s industrial policy with that of Gujarat’s, MCCIA director general Anant Sardeshmukh said that majority of the policies were the same in terms of tax holidays and special cesses,  but the latter manages to implement the policies faster.

“Only 60% of the previous industrial policies have been realised on ground. The lack of inter-ministerial coordination prevents Maharashtra from becoming industrial-friendly,” he said.
He added that the state had lost out major investments like Ford, Tata Motors, Maruti and other industries to Gujarat in the last few years.

Moreover, while Gujarat has managed to improve on its infrastructure over the years, its absence in Maharashtra is a major deterrent for investments.
