The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) today said that the Maharashtra government announced 50% reservation for women in local self government bodies based on the demand made by party chief and Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar recently.

NCP spokesperson Madan Bafna said there was no question of his party claiming credit for the decision.

"The decision has been taken by the Congress-NCP coalition government," he said.

Speaking about the upcoming elections to 27 zilla parishads, 54 panchayat samitis, 10 municipal corporations and 167 municipal councils from September this year to March next year, Bafna said the party leaders will undertake district wise meetings to take stock of the party's position in each district and prepare the future election strategy based on the feedback received from local leadership and workers.
