The state government is thinking of sending a team, comprising officials from various departments, to London to study the CCTV set up, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan announced on Tuesday. He also revealed that the home department is in constant touch with the Scotland Yard on security related issues.

A high power committee of ministers and the key officials discussed the CCTV installation issue, at a meeting held at the Mantralaya.

Mumbai First, the citizens initiative and Cisco, a corporate house in video surveillance services, made presentations to the committee. The government was advised to study the surveillance system installed by the London metropolitan police.

Chavan, after the meeting, said, “We have been in touch with the Scotland Yard on security issues and also on the installation of the CCTV surveillance in Mumbai. If the need arises, we will invite a team of Scotland Yard to Mumbai or send a team from here to visit London.”

The state has been advised to install 5,000 CCTV cameras across the city. “We have suggested that the monitoring of the CCTV system be with the city police. The cameras installed in the private establishments, such as hotels and markets, should be accessible to the city police so that they have total control,” said Narinder Nayar, chairman of Mumbai First.

He said that his group was playing the catalyst role and will help the government in providing the expertise and technical assistance.

Meanwhile, Cisco has the experience of the operations of the internet protocol-based video surveillance services installed in Haryana, Gujarat and in New Delhi during the Commonwealth Games. The company has gone through the Bandra Kurla Complex as a case study.

An official from the home department said that though no decision has been taken by the government, it has decided not to waste time in lengthy procedures. The chief minister has asked the officials from the home department to expedite the procedure.

“We expect the proposal to be approved at the earliest by the cabinet. Our plan is to install at least 5,000 CCTVs, including those that will be installed by the private establishments,” he said.
