The state excise department has moved a proposal to allow state excise duty exemption on wine made from jamun and cashew fruit.

The proposal has been forwarded to the industries department which will take a decision on the exemption of the excise duty and will bring the proposal to the Cabinet for approval.

Producers of wine from jamun and other fruits, particularly in the Konkan belt, have been demanding exemption from the state excise duty. The issue was discussed in the state legislature and the government had given assurance on various occasions to promote the wine made from jamun.

An official from the excise department said, “The wine from the grapes was exempted from excise duty for 15 years in 2006. The decision proved to be successful as the wine business has flourished in western Maharashtra with more wineries coming up.”

The officer said that his department has received several proposals from the jamun growers in Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri districts for the exemption on wine production.  A group of young entrepreneurs from Sindhudurg was on a hunger strike in Mumbai for the last few days to demand the authority to exempt excise duty on wine from the jamun fruit.

Excise minister Ganesh Naik met the delegation and promised to promote wine-making from jamun. Naik said, “We have assured the entrepreneurs to start the production on experimental basis.

The proposal for exemption from the excise will be moved before the Cabinet soon.”

Naik said that the producers sought the tag of official production and the government was positive about it.

The excise officer said that the industries department will study its financial implications before moving the proposal for the final nod.
