Chief minister Ashok Chavan on his first foreign tour has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a US firm for the safety and security of public transport in the city. He signed the MoU with Mineta Transportation Institute in Los Angeles on Monday.

With major parts of the budget for infrastructure projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) being spent on public transport, security has been high on the agenda of the planning authorities. In fact, public transport had frequently been the target of terrorists in the past and the security agencies had taken up this issue with the government. The memorandum signed with the institution is considered to be a major step by the state in that respect.

Nearly 70 lakh people travel on local trains and 45 lakh in Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) buses in the city.

The state government has sought technological and research support from the institute. “Transit security, training of personnel in public transport for passenger safety and the joint research in the related areas are the key areas in which the government seeks co-operation from the institute. Apart from that the application of the latest technology and the third-party review of security arrangements for the Metro and mono rail also are proposed in the agreement,” stated a press release issued by the chief minister’s office.

The memorandum also includes possible development of institutional mechanism and legal framework in the field of security for Metro and mono rail. “The safety and security of commuters is our topmost priority and we want to ensure global standards of safety for the Mumbaikars,” chief minister Ashok Chavan said. “Not only the Metro and mono rail but the passengers travelling in BEST and MSRTC buses will also be offered similar security.”

SVR Srinivas, additional metropolitan commissioner of MMRDA and Nitin Kareer, secretary to chief minister, signed the memorandum of co-operation with Rod Diridon, executive director of Mineta Transportation Institute.

The chief minister was given a detailed presentation on the latest methods of transportation security by the Los Angeles Metro Security chief. The state government delegation also interacted with the senior security officials of the city on their visit to the union station of the North American city.

The delegation will visit the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) of Los Angeles and interact with senior government officials on issues concerning long-term transport planning.
