The Kolhapur division has topped the class XII, Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) examination, results of which were announced on Friday afternoon.

Students from the Kolhapur division recorded a pass percentage of 77.27% in the overall result category (fresh candidates and repeaters), while Pune with 73.59% and Nashik with 73.28% coming in second and third. Mumbai came in fourth at 69.52%. The once successful Latur division was last, scraping the bottom of the barrel at 51.54%.

Significantly, the state recorded a poor pass percentage of 65.61% which is a good 6.56% less than the 72.17 % pass percentage recorded in 2010. The pass percentage in the state has continued to plummet from a healthy 78.38% which was recorded in 2009.

Girls continued to outshine the boys in the state with an almost 10% lead with 76.30% of girls passing as compared to 66.39% of boys among the fresh candidates (excluding repeaters).

In what should give vocational education a fillip in the state, students from the minimum competency vocational course (MCVC) topped the state list with as many as 82.56% of its students passing their HSC examination.

Addressing media persons on Friday, chairperson, MSBSHSE, Ujjwaladevi Patil attributed the lower pass percentage this year to the stringent measures adopted by the Board to check copying.

Patil pointed out that multiple vigilance squads (11 in each division) supported by government teams had managed to nab a whopping 4,435 cases of copying this year across the state. “The board’s campaign against copying is bearing fruit. Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts for instance, recorded zero cases of copying this year,” Patil said.
