Home minister RR Patil said in the lower house on Friday that his department would request the high court to transfer the rape cases older than one year to the fast-track court to speed up their disposal.
The minister also has assured adequate infrastructure for such courts.
The issue of the numerous cases of rape across the state was raised in the state assembly on Friday by the opposition benches during question hour.
When the members from the opposition tried to corner the government over the rise in the number of rape cases, chief minister Ashok Chavan assured that he would monitor the progress in the cases.
He told the house that his government would make a request to the chief justice of the high court and he was sure about the cooperation from the court.
Refusing to accept that the number of rape cases has shot up, Patil said that his department was keen on the speedy disposal of the cases.
Patil admitted that the conviction rate in the rape cases is low and his department was keen on improving it. “In most of the cases, the prosecution does not get cooperation from victims as they either compromise with the accused or come under pressure. It leads to difficulties in convicting the accused,” Patil said.
