The state government has decided to set up a separate heritage cell to conserve and preserve its richest and world renowned heritage structures across the state. According to a Public Works Department (PWD) official, the Vidarbha Heritage Society has raised the issue about setting up the heritage cell to be headed by a heritage architect. “There are several heritage buildings and precinct across the state but we do not have proper mechanism to preserve them. Many historic important structures are coming apart and no one is protecting them. After some years, historically, they will not have any value. We are working on a plan to set up the heritage cell,’’ he said.

Another official said the PWD will conduct a survey of all heritage sites. “Once we get the list of structures, as per the priority, heritage buildings and sites will be repaired by appointing experts. It is a mammoth task. But we have to maintain these cultural and historical sites,’’ he said adding due to lack of such a cell, the restoration and renovation of heritage structures is being carried out without consultation.

“It is dangerous. Because of this, we will lose all heritage structures. This lacklustre attitude will ruin our heritage structures,’’ said PWD officials requesting anonymity.

Bipin Sankhe, chief architect of PWD confirmed meeting with the members of Vidarbha Heritage Society. “We have discussed several issues with them. Everything is in the rudimentary stage. It is difficult for me say anything now,’’ he said.

Heritage expert Abha Nairan Lambha welcomed the government decision. “It is an important step. Maharashtra has maximum heritage sites including four world heritage sites — Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Elephanta caves, Ajanta and Ellora. We have various temples, Maratha forts, wadas and colonial buildings. A comprehensive and scientific study needs to be done.

It will help to protect the heritage structures properly. While framing the policy and setting up the cell, it should comprise multi-disciplinary experts such archaeologists, architects, heritage conservationists, urban planners and tourism experts,’’ she said.
