More than a decade after it completed the ambitious 50 flyovers project in the city, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has now been given another mammoth flyover project- this time in the western suburbs. The premier road development corporation has been asked to conduct a feasibility study to find out whether a number of flyovers between Mahim and Dahisar on various junctions can be constructed, making the journey virtually like a freeway.

According to MSRDC vice chairman Bipin Shrimali, the idea was first discussed in a meeting with chief secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad. “The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is already constructing the Eastern Freeway from south Mumbai up to Ghatkopar. Similarly, the state government has asked us to check whether a similar elevated road or a number of flyovers can be constructed on Link Road, Linking Road as well as SV Road connecting Mahim to Dahisar by a freeway. We will be carrying out a pre-feasibility study of these roads and the report for the same is expected in next two weeks,” informed Shrimali.

However, there will be a number of constraints if the corporation finally takes up the project. Shrimali admitted that all the three roads will be seeing a lot of development by the way of other infrastructure projects- particularly the metro line-II.

“We are aware that the Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd (CBM) metro is passing through many portions of these roads. This is precisely the reason that our consultants will be conducting a study to find out what is more feasible- an elevated road or a number of flyovers on junctions which see a lot of traffic snarls,” said Shrimali.

Though the officials at the corporation admit that the study is at a very preliminary state, sources in the state government have told DNA that there are not much chances of this project taking off.
“First of all, the corporation is already under heavy burden of debts. Constructing at least 25 to 30 flyovers from Mahim to Dahisar will at least cost us Rs2,500 to Rs3,000 crore.

Since this project is to be done in parts, it can not be done on a Private Public Partnership (PPP) basis. Moreover, technically the CBM metro is going right from Charkop up to Bandra on both SV road and Link road. Hence we will have to plan flyovers avoiding this Right of Way (RoW) of metro,” said a source.
