The Maharashtra government today said it would positively consider granting extra floor space index (FSI) or transfer of development rights (TDR) for development of the BDD chawl, so that those residing in the government quarters for years can get the flat on ownership basis.

An assurance to this effect was made in the Legislative Assembly by industries minister Narayan Rane during a discussion on a calling attention notice on the issue by BJP legislator Madhuri Misal and others.

"I have handled the BDD chawl issue during my tenure as chief minister. If the flats are given on an ownership basis to the policemen, then what will the government do if employees of other department come up with a similar request.

"Despite all the hurdles, the state government will have a sympathetic approach when it comes to giving flats on ownership basis to police personnel staying for years in BDD chawl," he added.

Misal stated that while illegal stalls that have come up in the area are regularised policemen staying in the area for years are denied the flats on an ownership basis by the government.

Echoing similar views, leader of opposition Eknath Khadse said, "when 1,464 tenements have been illegally given on tenancy rights, when conservancy workers can be given government quarters on ownership basis, why can't be same yardstick applied to police personnel staying in government quarters at BDD chawl," he asked.

Minister of state for housing Sachin Ahir turned down the demand saying that the government quarters cannot be handed over to the existing occupant.

"Of the total police force, 50 per cent have got accommodation in the government quarters. Rest of the policemen are staying on rent in slums or at far end of Mumbai," Ahir said, adding, "Home department will have to decide whether they want to give government quarters on ownership basis to the existing occupant."

Rane intervened in the discussion and assured to positively consider the issue.

However, expressing displeasure with the government, the Shiv Sena-BJP, and Raj Thackeray led MNS MLAs staged a walkout from the assembly.
