Maharashtra has a reason to celebrate as a recently released bulletin on maternal mortality ratio (MMR) by the government shows that the state has achieved the millennium development goals (MDG) set by the United Nations.

Improving maternal health by reducing the maternal mortality ratio by 75% by 2015 is one of the Millennium Development Goals set by the United Nations.

The target for India is to achieve the maternal mortality ratio of 109 by 2015. The progress of India on this front is vital for the overall reduction as every fifth woman dying due to maternal causes is an Indian.

Kerala was the sole state with the distinction in 2004-06. Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra are the new entrants. The maternal mortality ratio of India has declined from 254 in 2004-06 to 212 in 2007-09, a fall of 17%. The decline has been most significant in empowered action group of states and Assam. Among the southern states, the decline has been 15% and in the other states it has been 14%.

Dr DK Dakhure, director of health services, Maharashtra, said, “We have been aggressively working on reducing the MMR.” It also had a pilot study which showed that access to health information and services made available to married adolescents have helped in reducing the maternal mortality rate.

Suresh Shetty, state health minister is very happy with the improvement of MMR in the state. “This is the sharpest improvement recorded in terms of MMR in the country,” said Shetty.

While the state has achieved its target in MMR, the financial capital of India is seeing a rising number of maternal mortality rate as the BMC registered 206 maternal mortality cases in 2010.
