Students looking for admission to first year junior colleges this year have a reason to cheer. To give students a wider choice of colleges, 8, 320 more seats have been added at the junior college level this year.  The education department has approved 40 new junior colleges, so that students do not face a shortage of seats in the online admission process.

This year, there are 3, 600 more seats in science (general) stream, 3,040 more seats in commerce (general) and 1, 680 additional seats in arts. This move has benefited students seeking admission in science (general) stream, the number of seats have increased to 34, 642. “Science is the most sought after subject. The additional seats will help in easing off pressure,” said an official from the state education department.

Last year, 2.9lakh students had applied for 2. 57lakh seats in the Mumbai region. However, nearly 4,500 students’ admission had to be conducted the conventional way as they youngsters could not get into colleges of their choice through the online process, either due to “their scores or unavailability of seats.”

To avoid repeating the same mistakes, the department has increased number of seats from 2.57lakh to 2. 65lakh. Number of seats in Arts stream is lowest at 22,0 39, indicating its declining popularity, while there are 84, 866 seats in commerce stream. Also there will be 3,966 more seats in the vocational streams at the junior college level this year, a rise of 30% over the last academic year.

Some of the new colleges include six new colleges under the Pace Education Trust, Andheri, other junior colleges attached to schools like Little Angels school, Thane, St John’s High School, Goregaon, Oxford Junior College of Commerce, Kalyan, Holy Family School, Andheri among others. “”We have observed that in cities, every SSC pass-out wants to secure a seat in a ‘top college’, irrespective of what marks s/he has scored.  So we have given approvals to reputed schools and colleges hoping to maintain the quality of education,” he added.
