Electricity consumers in Maharashtra can look forward to a seamless billing mechanism with the state power distribution utility planning to harness modern radio frequency (RF) and infrared (IR) technology to upgrade its metering system, and to do away with data entry errors and practices which distort consumers’ bills.

These state-of-the-art RF and IR meters will reduce consumer’s complaints, ensure accuracy, do away with practices of billing consumers on an average basis without actually reading the meters and eliminate manual intervention in the process, said a senior Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MahaVitaran) official.

The RF-based meters will be installed in urban house clusters, whereas the IR meters will be set up in rural areas where houses and meters are dispersed, the official added. The installation will be done in phases, with around 30 lakh meters being set up every year. In the first phase, “paying areas” like Pune, Bhandup, Navi Mumbai, Nashik and Kolhapur will be targeted through mass replacement programmes.

The official added that these meters will enable the meter reader to access data on power consumption, date, time and meter number in just five seconds. The consumption pattern can also be downloaded.

“The meter reader will have to go take the reading. Hence, unfair practices like billing consumers on an average basis, entering data without going to the site and errors will be eliminated,” he added.
