In a bid to curb absenteeism and to keep a tab on the entry and exit time of professors, the state government has asked colleges in the state to install biometric card system.

The same might be extended even to monitor the attendance of students from the next academic year, once colleges will have the biometric access system in place.

In a government resolution passed on January 4, the state government made it compulsory for all universities to install the biometric card system on the campus.

According to an official from the higher and technical education department, several teachers engage in private tuitions and do not attend college. “A biometric system will ensure that there will not be any mishandling of the attendance register,” said the official.

Mahesh Phatak, the secretary for higher and technical education, said, “The state also wishes to regulate the attendance of students. As the purpose for regularising attendance among students is also to keep a check on the teachers’ students ratio in colleges for assesing the flow of grants, we are contemplating on the use of biometric system. However, the planning is at a very nascent stage and will take time to materialise.” Phatak added the state will be implementing the biometric system in phases.

The government regulation states that the biometric machines should be installed in prominent place on the campus, where it is accessible for all. Colleges which do not have a proper computer system should start installing them soon, ordered the state.

CR Sadashivan, the president of the Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisation (MFUCTO), said, “The state  has no right to make these decisions. It’s the university that is responsible. If the state government wanted to take such steps, they should have consulted us. MFUCTO will stage protests across the state and will ensure that this GR is not implemented.”
