Chief minister Ashok Chavan on Saturday disapproved of a comment made by actor Amitabh Bachchan that the 26/11 Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab was the “safest person in the country.”
“It is sad that celebrities feel so. We are protecting Kasab because he is a key evidence in the 26/11 case,” Chavan said, at a function organised by the South Asia Free Media Association, at the Rang Sharda Hall in Bandra.
Bachchan on his blog recently expressed dissatisfaction over the amount spent on Kasab’s security. “A year after 26/11, the safest person in the country is, ironically... Kasab,” Bachchan had said.
The government has so far spent Rs31 crore to protect Kasab. Chavan however defended the spending. “It is responsibility of the government to ensure Kasab, an accused in the 26/11 case, is protected as his evidence is crucial to the investigations.
