Maha cabinet to discuss rain compensation on Thursday

Mumbai: Maharashtra deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal today said that the state has suffered losses worth over Rs100-crore due to last week's unseasonal rains and the nature of compensation will be discussed during the cabinet meeting on Thursday.

"Immediate relief has been provided as per stipulated rules. We are in the process of collecting data and statistics about the losses in terms of damage to crops, houses, cattle. The issue will be deliberated at Thursday's cabinet meeting. The nature of comprehensive compensation especially to grape and onion growers will be discussed," Bhujbal told reporters here.

The deputy chief minister toured Nashik district over the weekend and disbursed relief to the affected. He said the losses to grape plantation has been massive. "Destruction of grape plantation spans 50,000 acre. The losses runs into crores of rupees for grape growers because grapes were ready for export," he said.

Onion, pomegranate, maize crop and cattle has also been lost. In Nashik district, five persons have lost their lives, he said.
