Maharashtra BJP today blamed Raj Thackeray-led MNS for its poor performance in urban areas during the state Assembly polls held last month. MNS damaged the party in Mumbai, Thane, Pune and Nashik regions, which is one of the main reasons for party's poor performance, sources said after a review meeting that was held here to discuss the post-poll scenario.

It highlighted that ally Shiv Sena has became weak due to MNS and could not attract more voters, the sources said. In 1995, the Shiv Sena-BJP came to power with BJP having vote share of 29 per cent. However, despite getting 33 per cent votes in 2009 polls, BJP could not attract the voters who were diverted to MNS, sources added.

The party also admitted that wrong selection of candidates damaged its image. Senior BJP leaders criticised caste politics and influence of money during the polls. BJP won 46 seats and Sena 44 seats in the Assembly polls, 19 less than what they had won in 2004 elections.
