Even as the first anniversary of German Bakery (GB) blast dawns on Sunday, the food joint loyalists cannot wait for the restaurant to reopen. They just miss their GB fix. Be it a scrambled eggs, cheese omelettes, cold coffee, tofu or the tempeh burger, they miss them all.
Students, doctors, backpackers or actors, GB welcomed them all.
Actor Vivek Oberoi frequented the place with friends and family, so did actress Mugdha Godse. Model Yana Gupta too used to be spotted sipping her coffee whenever she was in town.
City restaurateur Imrun Sethi told DNA that after a night of partying, early morning breakfasts had to be at GB. “The fresh fruit juices were the perfect remedy for battling hangovers. I would also get my fill of protein from the tofu or tempeh burgers with some form of eggs,” said Sethi, who now serves up similar breakfasts at his own restaurant.
Salil Deshpande, an executive with a Mumbai media house, is another fan of GB. “Scrambled eggs or cheese omelette along with cold coffee would make my trip to Pune complete,” remembered Deshpande.
Socialite Monika Trivedi got nostalgic and said, “When I moved to Pune 20 years ago, there were fewer places to hang out. Hence, whenever we needed to take friends out in the evenings, it used to be to GB. Their chai used to be simply amazing. I would also pick up my breads from there, as there weren’t too many bakeries around with such good multigrain bread.”
Expat Shola Carletti, a painter from Italy, also misses the place.
“You could walk into the place and never know who you could meet there — from millionaires, fellow travellers, acquaintances from the ashram, beggars and even masters. You could strike a conversation with any of them.”
