National spokesperson for the Indian National Congress, Manish Tewari, on Tuesday claimed that the Jan Lokpal Bill was a threat to the democratic set-up of the nation.

Addressing students of the Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies in Khadki, he said, “We have a time-tested doctrine of separation of power, which is essential for the Constitution to be healthy. The Jan Lokpal Bill seeks to disrupt this very system.”

According to Tewari, corruption is the only threat that can derail the country from development, but the sole drafting of a bill like the one on Lokpal is not the solution.

“Lokpal is just a quarter measure, which needs to be juxtaposed with the judiciary act. Moreover, we have had a plethora of laws in the Indian Penal Code; one additional law won’t change things,” he said.

“To stop corruption, we need a set of measures, not an independent measure like a lokpal. Lokpal will create tyranny of the unelected,” he said.

On Anna Hazare’s threat to go on fast from August 15, Tewari said, “These are people who follow the principle, ‘My way or high way’. If things go beyond the limits, then the government might follow the path taken against Ramdev in the past.”

Tewari criticised the BJP for its support to A Raja’s statement on the 2G scam against Manmohan Singh and P Chidambaram.

“If the BJP decides to support one part of Raja’s statement, then the other part of his statement squarely indicts former (BJP leader) AB Vajpayee, who also took charge of telecommunication for a brief period in 1999,” he said.
