Nagpur

Ruling BJP has emerged as the single largest party and set to retain power, by winning 62 seats in the 145-member Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) today.

The main opposition-- Congress ended up winning 41 seats, while BSP finished third with 12 seats.

However, rest of the parties could not even reach the double digit figure, as both Shiv Sena and NCP managed to win only six seats each. Shiv Sena had contested 18 seats, while NCP had contested 29 seats.

MNS, Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh and Indian Union of Muslim League (IUML) won two seats each. MNS, which had bagged two seats in last civic polls, retained the figure.

Prakash Ambedkar's Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh, which sided with Congress, won two seats and Indian Union of Muslim League (IUML) also got two positions each. As many as 11 independents emerged as winners.

Outgoing Nagpur mayor Archana Dehankar and her deputy Shekhar Sawarbandhe from Shiv Sena lost the race. NMC's standing committee chairman Sandeep Joshi, who is from BJP, and city unit party chief Anil Sole won the seats.

Former Mayor Maya Iwanate, former Deputy Mayor Ravindra Bhoyar (both from BJP) and another former Deputy Mayor Kishore Kumeria from Sena along with former Mayor Vikas Thakre from Congress were fortunate to retain their seats, Congress rebel and former Mayor Kishore Dorle also got elected as an independent.

Former Mayor Rajesh Tambe (BJP) lost the poll from Civil Lines prabagh and a practicising doctor and a known Ambedkar-follower Milind Mane, who contested on RPI-Left front seat, could not win.

Nashik

The 122-member Nashik corporation is all set to have a hung House with no party or combine near the 62 seats required for a majority. While the MNS has pocketed the largest number of 40 seats, The Congress-NCP combine has got 36 and Sena-BJP-RPI alliance 35.

It will be interesting to see if MNS supports any of the two major blocs in securing a majority or insists on having their backing for a majority of its own. The role of Independents and others who have bagged 11 seats will be crucial
