Mumbaikars were in for a surprise when the long hot and sultry day ended with lightning and thundershowers on Tuesday evening. Three people, including a woman and a child, died in Koparkhairane, Navi Mumbai, after being struck by lightning.

The heavy rains resulted in traffic jams on arterial roads in the city but there were no reports of water logging.

The island city received 24.08mm average rainfall between 6.30 pm and 7.30 pm on Tuesday. The highest rainfall was recorded at Dharavi 44.47mm. The western suburbs received 10.32 mm average rainfall with Bandra-Kurla complex recording the highest rainfall of 39.37 mm. The eastern suburbs received 22.39 mm average rainfall — the maximum being at Deonar (32.76 mm).

Though the city received good spell the catchment areas are still waiting for rain.
“Thundershowers are the normal monsoon pattern,” said Regional Met Centre director Dr K Sathidevi.
