The Pune Bar Association (PBA) has objected to the recent orders of the city police commissioner, Meeran Chadha Borwankar, for patrolling outside the Shivajinagar district court.

After the firing incident outside the court on Thursday, Borwankar had ordered special patrolling outside the court premises and this led to the arrest of four suspects wanted by Pimpri police since February 17.

President of Pune Bar Association, Dhananjay Taur told DNA, “It’s bad as the suspects arrested by the police had come to meet the lawyers in the court and they have been arrested.

“The police can patrol the area outside the court to prevent undue incidents, but they should not arrest the suspects. Prior to setting up the system of policing, they should have interacted with us. The suspects had approached the courts for their anticipatory bail hearing.”

Taur’s contention arises from the fact that the police had arrested four suspects on Monday. They were identified as Ashok Bhagwan Waghmare (35), a resident of Gandhinagar in Pimpri; Amit Manik More (22), Sambhajinagar Chawl; and Yusuf Shaikh (23) and Kantilal Shinde (30) both residents of Chinchwad. All four were charged with rioting and attempted murder.

Deputy commissioner of police (crime branch) Rajesh Bansode told DNA, “As per the senior officers’ direction, the crime branch units will  patrol outside the court premises to keep a watch to prevent undue incidents.”

Assistant commissioner of police (zone III) Sudhir Chaughule told DNA, “The four suspects created nuisance in Gandhinagar on February 17 after the results were declared in Pimpri.

“The suspects were campaigning for the Congress. Their party were defeated in the area so they started  beating up residents. We had filed the case and they were wanted. We came to know from the crime branch that the suspects were arrested near the court premises.”
