The severe cyclonic storm 'Laila', which crossed the coast close to Bapatla in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday evening, is likely to bring light rain in some parts of Maharashtra in next couple of days.
According to the observations recorded by the India meteorological department (IMD), Pune at 4.30 pm on Thursday, the cyclonic system was crossing the coast close to Bapatla.
The additional director general (meteorology) of IMD, Pune, HR Hatwar said the cyclonic storm is carrying moisture and cloud from sea.
"This would lead to light rains spread over some parts of the state due to its proximity to Andhra Pradesh," Hatwar told DNA.
Hatwar added that there is a distinct possibility that the day temperature would also go down in different parts of the state.
According to experts at IMD, Pune the current environmental conditions and numerical weather prediction models suggested that the cyclonic storm is likely to weaken gradually and move initially in a northerly direction and then head north easterly direction towards Orissa.
The IMD, Pune stated in its bulletin that under the influence of Laila, widespread rainfall with scattered heavy to very heavy falls and isolated extremely heavy falls is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana during the next 24 hours.
It also stated that gale force wind with speed reaching 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph likely along and off Andhra Pradesh coast during next 12 hours. And sea condition will be turbulent along and off Andhra Pradesh coast during next 12 hours.
IMD, Pune had already predicted that Laila is unlikely to affect the advancement of the southwest monsoon which has already reached Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea on May 17.
Hatwar said that the monsoon system remained over Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea for the last couple of days.
"The conditions are favourable for further advancement of monsoon over some more parts of southwest Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of southwest Bay of Bengal, some parts of west-central and some more parts of east central Bay of Bengal," he added.
