Family members of Kasaiwada resident Mohammad Ajmeri Shaikh, 29, who has been arrested for the rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl, claim that he is innocent and being implicated by the police.
Nehru Nagar police produced Shaikh at the Vikhroli court which sent him to police remand till March 17.
Shaikh told the court that he did not know on what charges he was arrested and alleged that he was beaten up by the police. After the magistrate explained to him the charges under which he has been booked, Shaikh denied his involvement in the case.
The prosecution told the court that Shaikh was spotted by a few witnesses in the locality on the day when the crime was committed. The police now want to get a medical test done on him and recover the clothes he was wearing when he allegedly committed the crime.
Shaikh’s sister Mehrunisa Siddiqui who was present in the court, said. “My brother has been involved in petty crimes, but he will never commit such a heinous crime. On the day when the crime took place, he was in our locality at a neighbour’s place.”
Nehru Nagar police claimed that Shaikh was found roaming around suspiciously in Dharavi on Sunday evening. When the Dharavi police questioned him, he said that he was a resident of Kasaiwada in Kurla. He was then handed over to Nehru Nagar police.
Shaikh is a history sheeter and has cases of threatening, assault, theft, and illegal possession of arms registered against him. He was served an externment notice a few daysgo and was asked to be present at the office of the assistant commissioner of police in Nehru Nagar for the purpose.
Mehrunisa said that on Saturday Shaikh had gone to a hospital to get treated for injuries that he suffered in a fight with people from the locality. However, the police believe the marks on Shaikh’s chest are from when he attacked the victim and she tried to stop him.
