A 17-year-old Kurla girl staged her own kidnapping drama on Sunday to mislead her mother and elder brother, and go meet her Pune-based boyfriend.

Finally, after ten hours of painstaking investigation, the Nehru Nagar police found her safe at the Vallabh Nagar bus stand in Pune in the wee hours of Monday.

During questioning, the girl revealed that she had fallen in love with her neighbour Ajay Lokhande, resident of Bhosari in Pune for the past four years. (She and her mother had resided in Bhosari before moving to Kurla.) The two began speaking to each other on the phone and finally decided to marry.

On Sunday at 1pm, the girl boarded the Pune-bound MSTRC bus from Nehru Nagar bus depot to meet Lokhande. After reaching Pune at 5pm, she contacted Lokhande so he could pick her up.

The girl called her mother at around 8pm, saying that three unidentified persons had dumped her in a white car and taken her from Kurla to a shed near an MSRTC bus stand in Ahmednagar, where she was now confined. She begged her mother to rescue her, and abruptly disconnected the line.

A terrified mother lodged a complaint at the Nehru Nagar police station.  The police suspected that the victim might have been having an affair with a boy in Pune. Accordingly, sub-inspector Shashank Bandgar and his team, along with the victim’s mother, travelled to the family’s native place in Pune, where they learnt that the victim was having an affair with Lokhande.

The mother received a call on her mobile from her daughter at 6am on Monday, saying that she’d been badly beaten by her abductors and then abandoned at the Vallabh Nagar bus depot in Pune. The mother told her to wait at the bus stop where she would pick her up. The police team and the mother reached the bus depot and found her there. There were no injury marks on her body.

She revealed that she did not tell her mother and brother about her love story for fear that they would “scold” her, and so she cooked up the whole kidnapping incident. Afterwards she felt guilty about lying to them, and the boy was apprehensive as well about the police getting involved. So she decided to meet her mother and return.

“Ajay Lokhande, 22, a welder, was arrested for kidnapping, while the victim was sent to the Women’s Observation Home at Deonar,” said DCP Manoj Lohia. He added that the victim was subsequently taken to the Nagpada police hospital for a medical check-up to determine whether she’d been raped.
