The state home department has sent deputy superintendent of police (DySP), Vijay Parkale, and police inspector (PI) Dnyaneshwar Mundhe on leave in connection with the alleged rape of a woman  trainee constable in Kolhapur.

Minister of state for home, Satej Patil, said in Kolhapur on Thursday action against the Kolhapur-based cops comes in the wake of allegations against the duo by the arrested suspect, head constable Yuvraj Kambale.

In his statement to the police on April 24 Kambale had alleged the duo, along with police constable Avinash Powar, were the real culprits in the case, and claimed that he was being framed in the case.

According to official sources, some more women trainee constables have complained to the additional superintendent of police of Nashik, Maithili Jha, about alleged sexual harassment that they had faced.

Jha has been assigned by the state government to probe the matter and submit a report. She arrived in Kolhapur on Wednesday and has started the probe.

Stating that the probe would be conducted in a fair manner, Jha appealed to women trainee  constables to get in touch with her in case of they have experienced sexual harassment.

Minister Patil said Jha has been instructed to record the statements of all 71 trainee women constables of Kolhapur, presently undergoing training in Nagpur. The rape victim is also from the same batch.

“I have also told Jha to seek assistance of senior IPS officer (Pune police commissioner) Meeran Borwankar.

Jha will investigate officers of any rank and will file the report,’’ Patil said. But the minister ruled out transferring district superintendent of police, Yashasvi Yadav, despite demands by some political parties.

The leader of the opposition, Eknath Khadse, and the Shiv Sena spokesperson, Neelam Gorhe, told reporters on Thursday that the rape victim had contacted them about nine days ago.

“I had informed senior officers, including DGP Ajit Parasnis. The victim had named an officer and I will give the information to the inquiry officer,’’ Gorhe said.

“We do not believe Jha can probe the case. She also faces a criminal case in Nashik,’’ Khadse alleged, and said there had been seven cases of sexual harassment by police officers within a year in the state.

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Thursday said his government will take action against officers involved in the sexual harassment of woman trainees within two days. Chavan was in Kolhapur to attend a private function.
