A day after DNA reported that Deepika may be suffering from post-partum psychosis, city doctors say she needs medication rather than sending her to jail.

Dr Parul Tank, a consulting psychiatrist at Asian Hearts Institute and head of psychiatric department, Rajawadi hospital said, “The fact that she took this extreme step of killing her daughter shows that she can be suffering from PPP syndrome. Given the fact that she had two miscarriages and she was carrying a twin added to her stress.”

The doctors also emphasised that the family needs to be very careful and supportive to her. “She needs a supportive family and immediate psychiatric evaluation to prove PPP syndrome. She needs immediate medication. One should know why she killed her daughter and what led her to this rather than sending her to jail,” added Dr Tank.

According to doctors there needs to be some awareness on PPP syndrome as mostly people ignore the symptoms, which can prove fatal.

“Post delivery is a very turbulent period. There is not much awareness among the patients. Every complaint should be looked into. PPP syndrome happens to 1 or 2 women out of 1,000. In

Deepika’s case the post delivery period and the financial problem must have added up,” said Dr Neeta Warty, gynaecologist, Jaslok hospital.

KEM hospital doctors said she was unable to handle both the ailing children at the same time and this forced her to take the adverse step.

Deepika is under 24x7 supervision and her mother and husband are with her. A nurse who had been posted in her ward for last seven days said, “She has not been able to feed the babies as she was not lactating. We never saw any biased behaviour while feeding the babies. It is strange she actually took this drastic step.”
