The abject fear of minor girls from the south Mumbai area being kidnapped and killed resurfaced on Saturday, when the Colaba police arrested a youth on charges of attempting to abduct two minor girls from the Cuffe Parade area. The police have now decided to put the arrested person, Krishna Laxman Pawar, 20, through a DNA analysis to ascertain if he was involved in the earlier murders of two minor girls in the Cuffe Parade and Colaba areas. Pawar is a resident of Geeta Nagar slums at Dr Homi Bhabha Road, Colaba.

According to complainant Maula Chandsaahab Shaikh, 32, a labourer and resident of Dr BA Nagar slums in the Cuffe Parade area, his five-year old daughter Samreen Shaikh was playing along with other children in the Buddha Mandir lane at around 5pm on Saturday. “My elder daughter Chand Bi saw an unknown person luring Samreen with chocolates before taking her along with him,” said Shaikh in his police complaint.

Chand Bi then informed her father, who was nearby, about this. When Shaikh went in search of Samreen, he found her with the unknown person a few distance away and raised an alarm.

“The terrified youth, later identified as Pawar, left Samreen at the spot and fled. A few hours later, Shaikh saw some people gathered at the same spot. On making inquiries, he learnt that the same youth had been trying to abduct yet another girl, but was caught in the act by the girl’s father,” said an officer of the Cuffe Parade police.

After Shaikh shared Samreen’s story with the mob, Pawar was badly assaulted before being handed over to the police. Pawar, who was arrested at 10.10pm, has been charged under section 363 A (kidnapping or maiming a minor for the purposes of begging) of the Indian Penal Code. He is currently under police custody till April 14.

“Although this could be a case of begging racket we want to probe Pawar’s role in the earlier two murder cases, as the age group of the girls whom he was trying abduct is similar to the earlier murder victims, namely Jagruti Patel, 3 years, and Karishma Chavan, 3.5 years. In order to probe his role, we will be getting his DNA analysis done,” said another police officer.
