Policemen, particularly the older lot, are trying hard to keep pace with the changing face of technology. They have realised they can no longer be ignorant, particularly when their own children are also vulnerable to cyber criminals.

In an attempt to police their own homes, several city policemen have signed up for computer courses. They want to hone their computer skills, learn how to surf the net and protect their children from internet-related crimes. Also, they want to shake off the tag of being “uncool and illiterate”.

“My children spend several hours surfing the internet,” said Anant Kenjale, senior inspector, Samta Nagar police station. “With the number of cyber crimes that are reported, I thought it would be a wise decision for me to be up-to-date with modern technology. However, the young generation is quite smart. They often fool us by locking the sites they visit by a secret password. We have to constantly update our knowledge to beat them.”

Apart from that, the older rung of policemen also wants to explore the plethora of opportunities offered in netspace. The tedious rigmarole of standing in a queue to pay an electricity bill or get a bank passbook updated is cut short by just the click of a mouse.

“The younger generation is well-versed with concepts like e-banking and e-shopping. I learn from my kids about the same and discover easier ways to complete my daily chores,” said Ramnath Ambre, senior inspector, Vile Parle police station.

Policemen have understood that their kids are exposed to computers since a young age as it is a part of curriculum in most schools. “If we know it ourselves, we can also teach them a lesson or two in computers and feel proud about keeping pace with technology,” joked a police officer, who is about to retire shortly.

Knowing computers also helps in boosting the morale of the older lot while they rub shoulders with the younger and newer recruits. “The young batches of police are computer-savvy. If policemen above 50 years keep up with modern technology, it will also help us in making our jobs easier,” said a senior police officer.

The officer said knowledge of computer helped in their day-to-day functioning and also to maintain statistics and records.
