Faced with shortage of funds and many pending projects awaiting clearance, elected members of the Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB) have decided to meet the Union defence minister, AK Antony, and Union minister of state for defence, Pallam Raju, in mid-February.

The delegation will include MLA Vinayak Nimhan and former MLA Chandrakant Chhajed. Slum rehabilitation, change in floor space index (FSI) norms and additional funds for development projects will top their agenda.

KCB vice-president Manish Anand told DNA that the board was facing severe shortage of funds to implement many pending projects. “We had met Pallam Raju during his last visit to Pune and apprised him of the issues faced by the KCB. We had also passed a resolution for the rehabilitation of around 15,000 people, who are living in slums for which we have to get the defence ministry’s nod. A proposal for the construction of residential houses for their rehabilitation has been okayed by the board,” he said.

Of the six slums within the KCB jurisdiction, two slums in Rajiv Gandhinagar and Mahadev Wadi are on cantonment land. The KCB would request the clearance of the project, which would cost around Rs100 crore.

Earlier, when the KCB delegation met Raju, the minister had told it that though defence land could not be used for the purpose, construction could be allowed on the present site of slums on cantonment land. The KCB plan was to construct a shopping complex adjacent to the residential complex to generate
revenue.

Also, a proposal for constructing a hockey stadium of international standards in Khadki, one of the bastions of Indian hockey, is awaiting the ministry’s clearance. The proposal for Rs18-crore astro-turf hockey ground has been accepted in principle by the general officer commanding-in-chief, Southern Command, and was sent to the ministry.

Anand said the delegation would also give a proposal for the revision of the FSI norms. “We will submit a proposal to change the FSI ratio from one to two. Also, we will seek additional funds from the ministry for the pending projects,” he added.
